If you’re looking to plan the perfect weekend but aren’t sure where to point the car, I’ve got you covered. Northern California is my absolute favorite playground for a date, and I’ve narrowed down three of my go-to itineraries that never fail to impress.
Whether you're looking for world-class wine, coastal views, or a literal fairytale village, here is exactly how I’d spend a day in my favorite spots.
My Perfect Day in Napa
Napa is my "sophisticated" go-to. There is something about the rolling hills that just makes you want to slow down.
The Morning View: I always start at Sterling Vineyards. It’s iconic for a reason—you take an aerial gondola up to the winery. I usually just go for the basic tasting; it’s a great way to sip while you explore the Greek-style architecture and take in those panoramic valley views.
The Afternoon Stroll: After the tasting, I love to head into Downtown Napa. It’s evolved so much lately—it's walkable, chic, and full of hidden boutiques.
Dinner : For dinner, I’m heading straight to ZuZu. It’s a Spanish tapas spot with a killer vibe. Sharing small plates is the ultimate date move.
A Bayside Escape to Sausalito
When I want to feel like I’ve been transported to the Italian Riviera without the 12-hour flight, I head across the Golden Gate to Sausalito.
The Vibe: I usually spend a couple of hours just exploring downtown. Walking along the Bridgeway with the San Francisco skyline peaking through the mist is pure magic.
The Meal: You have to eat at Scoma’s. It’s right on the water, and there is nothing better than fresh seafood while watching the ferries come in.
The Tradition: My day here isn't complete without Lappert’s Ice Cream. It’s a local legend. I usually grab a scoop and sit by the fountain to people-watch.
The Fairytale Trip to Solvang
Okay, it’s technically a bit of a drive (Central Coast territory), but Solvang is my favorite "escape the real world" spot. It’s a Danish village that feels like a movie set.
Breakfast First: I always start at Brekkies. Their breakfast game is strong—it’s the best way to fuel up before a long day of walking.
The "Giant" Discovery: I make a point to stop by the California Nature Art Museum specifically to see the giant troll. Her name is Lulu Hyggelig, and she’s a massive sculpture made of reclaimed wood. It’s a great photo op!
Afternoon Refreshment: After all that walking, I love hitting the beer tap at Solvang Brewing Company. The building itself is beautiful, and the atmosphere is always lively.
The Grand Finale: This is the pro move: I drive about 40 minutes over to Santa Barbara for dinner at Yoichi’s. It is a must-try if you want to end your trip on a high note. For $180 per person, you get an 8-course Kaiseki experience that is genuinely world-class. It’s a traditional Japanese multi-course meal that focuses on seasonality and artful presentation—from the Owan (soup) to the Kanmi (dessert). It’s intimate, quiet, and honestly, one of the best meals you’ll ever have. They are very attentive and thoughtful.
